((( a go at something semi canon (though not epilogue) compliant )))

Sitting in a sunny spot in Andromeda's countryside garden, it was hard to remember life ever being anything but lazy summer heat and glasses of cold lemonade. Harry had spent the entirety of the day in the sun playing with Teddy, and his flushed skin felt like it blurred together with the warm, still air, making it easy to forget he even inhabited a physical form to begin with. His mind felt equally foggy. It was no wonder to him why he kept returning to just exactly this sunny spot.
Comfortably seated on the café set, perched on the top of the sloping garden, Harry watched Teddy tirelessly rummage through the berry bushes skirting the fence. Somewhere behind him, Harry heard Andromeda's spellwork through the open kitchen windows, and the subsequent boiling of water. Everything was the cloned image of the preceding afternoons, a routine that had been years in the making.
The only new addition was the presence of Draco Malfoy, sitting beside him across the table; admittedly, even he had started to carry a sense of tentative familiarity.
By autumn, Harry and Malfoy would have occasionally coincided at Andromeda's for a year, though it had taken months for the joint visit to be regarded as intentional. While Harry had visited the grandmother of his godson for as long as Teddy had lived with him, Malfoy had only recently reestablished a relationship with Andromeda. It had been awkward at first but, a year in, Harry had yet to find his presence uncomfortable. It had even surprised Harry himself how willingly and easily he had given up any lingering feelings of resentment, though he didn't dare speak on Malfoy's behalf.
"When're your classes starting back up?" Harry asked, breaking the silence that had fallen between them after Andromeda had excused herself to prep dinner.
Harry had turned to look at the other man, the sun shining in his eyes, first making him squint. A moment later, Harry admitted defeat, taking off his glasses to lessen the glare of the setting sun against the lenses. He rubbed his eyes.
"Or are you starting your residency by now?"
Over the course of the last year, Harry had learned more things about Draco Malfoy than held ever thought he would, and not against his will either. Putting back on his glasses, this time a bit further down his nose, he offered the other man his full attention.
Though Harry would hardly qualify them as friend, their interactions no longer felt hostile. There was still a timidness to their interactions, Harry never really knowing what line of conversation to string up when they were left alone; but he did no longer have the instinct to flee from it.

Even if Draco had long ago stopped trying to make sense of his life, he couldn’t say that he would ever really get used to regularly seeing Harry Potter in a casual setting.
After the war, Draco’s life was turned upside down, in more ways than one, and in an attempt to get some control over his life he had reached out to his estranged aunt. He had never had a relationship with Andromeda, her having been disowned before Draco had been born, but he found that he enjoyed getting to know her.
It felt like a missing piece was falling into place, especially now that he only really had his mum left. It had felt empty and a little lonely, so getting to connect with Andromeda was something he felt that he had needed to do.
The fact that that meant that he would also be reconnecting with Harry Potter was not something that he had expected, but it was also something that he found that he didn’t mind terribly much.
The first couple of times he had been forced to hang out with Harry had been incredible awkward, something that he had been able to see mirrored in Harry’s reactions as well. However, over time, the two of them had fallen into a tentative acquaintanceship and that was honestly far more than what Draco had ever expected to get from him.

As they sat in Andromeda’s garden, Draco tried to soak in the calm of it all. He rarely afforded himself breaks from his studies, feeling the need to not only succeed but excel. It was hard work, but so was keeping up the relation that he had managed to build with Andromeda and he found both to be important to him.
Harry’s question brought him out of his bubble, forcing himself to actually be present and not just allow himself to get lost in his thoughts.
“Classes are starting up Monday next week,” Draco stated, finding it nice that Harry was even interested, when he knew that he didn’t have to be. Even if their relationship could hardly be called friendship, Draco still found that Harry seemed genuinely interested in him, which was both intimidating and comforting.
“I start residency one this semester is over.”

The reply made him smile, some part of him liking the image of Malfoy attending school better, anyway. It held a greater sense of familiarity, better able to picture him hunched over a textbook than doing his medical residency.
"That's nice," he encouraged kindly, and, despite the dull choice of words, Harry did mean it.
Malfoy had taken exceptional steps to better himself in the years following the War; Harry had always found that to be of great merit, though he had yet to figure out how to offer that praise. For now, it manifested in the increased amount of effort Harry put into furthering their relation.
"Teddy's starting school this Thursday," Harry offered in the interest of the conversation, even though the swell of contradicting emotions caused made his smile go weird.
Harry felt like he had lived a million lives, and yet the last few years with Teddy had felt like it had gone by in a haze. Naturally, Harry had followed every parenting advice in the book, urging the child to socialize with peers, but the few hours a week Teddy spent at his nursery hardly compared to attending school full time. It had only recently struck Harry just how much he depended on Teddy to feel a sense of purpose, and the thought of being alone at Grimmauld made him uneasy.
Regardless, Harry was still smiling when he tipped his head towards Malfoy, attention having otherwise drifted towards Teddy when the topic of the conversation shifted to include him. Above all, Harry felt a sense of melancholy.
"I think I'm finally going to tackle some of the literal skeletons in my closets," he added, easier. "Might even need an Auror to change out my furnace."

There was something cathartic about having such a normal conversation with Potter, having never thought that they would ever have any level of relationship. It was enjoyable though, just as long as he didn’t pause to think too much about it.
Getting back in touch with Andromeda had meant that he had gotten in touch with Teddy as well, and to Draco’s own surprise, he had found that he enjoyed being around his cousin. He had never really gotten to have any level of relationship to any kids, but he adored Teddy and he knew that the feeling absolutely was mutual. It was freeing to have someone around who didn’t know anything about his past and someone who was just willing to be around him without asking questions.
“Must be weird,” he stated, knowing that he didn’t have too much more to add that could help Potter. He hadn’t actually been involved in Teddy’s life for that long, but he had still gotten to watch him grow up and to know that it was already time for him to start in school seemed startling to him. “He is growing up so fast.”

Harry nodded at that, following Malfoy's eyes to Teddy, his (now) brown hair disappearing in and out of the berry bushes. Teddy was thrilled to start school, sharing his excitement with anybody who would listen to him. Harry felt guilty knowing he had considered delaying him a year.
"Yeah," he agreed distantly. "He is."
Harry parted his lips to continue, mentally forming a question he didn’t know if he should even ask. It made him glance at Malfoy, eternally attempting to gauge the familiarity of their relation. Eventually reconsidering, Harry looked down at his hands, distractedly picking at his finger.
If asked about the lasting effects the War had had on him, Harry would say he had lost any proper concept of time. The last decade had escaped him like sand running through his fingers, struggling to differentiate between his memories or even gaining a firm grasp on the present. Even with Teddy serving as a firm point of reference, Harry had no idea how 5 years had already passed; Harry suspected it was because he hadn't expected to live this long, unable to process how days kept on coming.
Part of him had wanted to ask if Malfoy ever felt the same.
Harry knew it wasn't like that for Ron and Hermione; in fact, he knew both of them would argue they remembered too much. Harry didn't disagree with that, in part grateful for the blanks in his memory. He would just like time to slow down long enough for him to catch up.
That felt easier to say.
"Sometimes I feel like I can’t keep up," he eventually said, still directing it to his thumb. He didn’t sound burdened; rather, his voice was quietly matter-of-factly, not expecting an answer. "With time. It's weird."
